Council joins Recycle Week’s call to action

As Recycle Week 2019 approaches, South Northamptonshire Council (SNC) is joining the nationwide call for people to take matters into their own hands.

Inspired by Our Planet, Greta Thunberg and Sir David Attenborough, research from Recycle Now reveals that over 60 per cent of UK households are now recycling more than they were a year ago because of environmental concerns.

Cllr Dermot Bambridge, SNC's portfolio holder for environmental services, said: "South Northants residents are already leading the way and the district is the 7th best recycler in the country.

"At more than 60 per cent our recycling rate is 15 per cent above the national average.

"But we know 80 per cent of our waste can be recycled. So, people shouldn't feel helpless, they can take matters into their own hands now and make sure nothing that can be recycled ends up in their black bin.

"And you don't have to ignore the 20 per cent that can't be recycled in your blue bin, green bin or silver caddy either. We've signed-up our offices at The Forum as a Terracycle collection point for crisp packets which has been hugely successful.

"Terracycle aim to make the unrecyclable recyclable and any household or business can sign up as a collection point for a whole range of products and materials.

"We also advertise the fountain in The Forum as somewhere you can fill your reusable water bottle for free through the City to Sea's Refill campaign and support grass roots recycling groups via social media which share good ideas on how to reduce waste or reuse it.

"Analysis of South Northants bins show that bathroom products such as aerosol cans and shampoo bottles that can be recycled often end up in black bins. These can easily be recycled in your blue bin, find out more here www.southnorthants.gov.uk/wasteandrecycling.To check whether a material or product can be recycled visit https://www.recyclenow.com/what-to-do-with.
