South Northants stands ready for Armed Forces Day

The build-up to Armed Forces Day began in South Northamptonshire on Monday, 24 June during a flag raising ceremony at The Forum in Towcester.

Every year South Northamptonshire Council (SNC) holds a ceremony to raise the Armed Forces Day Flag above its offices. The ceremony was hosted by the council Chairman, Cllr Rosie Herring with Rev Lulu Pelly from St Lawrence Church officiating.

Russ Barrie, Chairman of the Northamptonshire Royal British Legion led the colour guard with Sponne School Band providing the music. Mr Barrie gave particular praise to the school's bugler who he said played the best Last Post he had ever heard. Mr Barrie also said, "I come here every year to do this parade, it's just brilliant, very intimate.

"Armed Forces Day is very important. We have to keep remembering our fallen and those who remain in service. It's a time when the whole community can show their respect for our Armed Forces, past and present."

Cllr Rosie Herring said: "This is a chance to recognise what the Armed Forces do for us and the sacrifices that they make personally, as well as the sacrifice their families make."

SNC is a signatory of the Armed Forces Community Covenant, along with all councils in Northants. This is a voluntary statement of mutual support between the civilian community and its local Armed Forces community. For more information please visit - http://bit.ly/SNCAFCC.
