Council here to help halt homelessness

Following a change in legislation, people threatened with homelessness in South Northamptonshire are being urged to contact the council as soon as they can.

The Homelessness Reduction Act 2017 came into force this month and increases the number of people who are eligible for help.

Councillor Stephen Clarke, South Northamptonshire Council's portfolio holder for economic growth, regeneration and housing, said: "The new act represents a significant change in homelessness legislation. However, SNC is in a good position to respond as it already has a prevention based approach to homelessness.

"We now have an increased duty to assist households regardless of priority need or local connection. It is not entirely clear what impact this will have on our district so we intend to review matters in 12 months to see if our Homelessness Strategy needs to be modified.

"The most important thing is that people are aware of the council's ability to help them. So if you or someone you know is worried about being made homeless, you should contact the council as soon as possible."

Some of the legislation changes include extending the period during which someone can be considered to be at threat of homelessness from 28 to 56 days.

It also requires the council to carry out an assessment and to create a personalised plan in which both the council and the applicant agree a set of actions to end a period of homelessness or the threat of homelessness.

Anyone who is homeless or worried about becoming homeless should call SNC during office hours on 01327 322374, or 0800 1601022 in an out-of-hours emergency.
