New guidance looks to update parking standards for new development in South Northants

A four week public consultation began this week on new planning guidance for parking in South Northamptonshire.

The draft South Northamptonshire Council (SNC) Parking: Standards and Design supplementary planning document (SPD) outlines the parking provision expected for all new developments, whether residential or commercial, and replaces current guidance which is 14 years old.

Cllr Roger Clarke, SNC's portfolio holder for planning and environment, said: "14 years ago the thinking was different. It was thought limiting the number of spaces with maximum dimensions would encourage people to find alternatives to the car.

"In rural areas like ours it's never been easy to live without a car and we have to face that reality. So the new guidance adopts minimum standards and encourages well designed parking suitable for today's larger vehicles.

"The writing is also on the wall for the combustion engine and we have to future proof new homes and public car parks so our streets don't become a knot of charging cables.

"In support of sustainable transport this document also revises the cycle parking standards."

The draft SPD looks to set a minimum requirement for two parking spaces per new dwelling. It also seeks to require that all new homes and public car parks have some provision for charging electric cars.

Other aspects covered by the SPD include: disabled parking, motorbikes and scooters, coaches, parking standards by business class of use, and lorry parking standards.

To take part in the consultation which ends at 5pm Thursday, 1 February 2018, visit – https://www.southnorthants.gov.uk/consultation-parking-spd, email - parkingspd@southnorthants.gov.uk, or write to Development Management, SNC, The Forum, Moat Lane, Towcester, NN12 6AD.

Paper copies of the draft policy can also be found at libraries in Brackley, Towcester, Middleton Cheney, Roade and Deanshanger and both Brackley and Towcester Town Halls.
